色花堂Interview with CBS San Antonio: Wrong Number Texts

You should immediately be suspicious of any text you get from a number not in your contacts. It may be innocent looking.

鈥淚t is saying: 'We are still on to meet for dinner at 6?' Or 'can you call me right away?鈥 said Chris Drake, a phone security expert with iconectiv. 鈥'It鈥檚 urgent.'鈥

鈥淎lmost every day there are two or three or four different text messages that come in and say something like 鈥榟ey, how are you doing?鈥欌 said Peter Warmka, a cybersecurity expert and founder of The Counterintelligence Institute. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like they know you, right? But you鈥檙e saying I don鈥檛 recognize this person. They鈥檙e mistaken.鈥

Your first reaction is to be polite and let them know they have the wrong number.

鈥淢aybe this is urgent,鈥 Drake said. 鈥淚 should tell them: 鈥榊ou fat-fingered this and you need to correct the number. Try again.鈥欌
